Cuba Libre - Ausstellung von Rinaldo Hopf

Cuba Libre, so der Titel der diesjährigen Ausstellung von Rinaldo Hopf, ist der Begriff für den weltweit bekannten Longdrink, den es in unzähligen Varianten gibt. Immer dabei, Rum, ob weiß oder braun und Cola, von der einen oder anderen Marke, mit Zucker und Limetten, oder ohne.
Cuba Libre, freies Kuba, steht in unseren Tagen aber auch für die vorsichtige Öffnung des Landes. Wobei klar scheint, dass die Kubaner in ihrer Mehrheit keinen Raubtier-Kapitalismus herbeisehnen, sondern im Gegenteil an den Errungenschaften der Revolution, wie zum Beispiel Bildung für alle und flächendeckende medizinische Versorgung festhalten wollen. Zu wach ist die Erinnerung daran, dass sich die Insel im Würgegriff der Mafia und großer Konzerne befand.
Dies alles in Aquarellen festzuhalten, ist dem Künstler Rinaldo Hopf gelungen. Ausufernde karibische Lebensfreude, Stolz und Stilsicherheit, gepaart mit revolutionärem Bewußtsein. Fast scheint es so, als ob die Farben seiner Bilder selbst zu tanzen beginnen. Das mag vielleicht daran liegen, dass die neuen Arbeiten wesentlich freier und spontaner gemalt sind als bisher, vielleicht liegt es aber auch daran, dass Rinaldo Hopf für diese Serie auf die Sumi-e-Technik zurückgreift, die sich für handgeschöpfte Papiere aus China und Indien geradezu anbietet.

Cuba libre, which is the title of this year's exhibition by Rinaldo Hopf, is the term for the world-famous longdrink, which is available in countless variants. The base is always rum, whether white or brown and coke, from one brand or another, with sugar and limes, or without.
Cuba libre, free Cuba, stands also for the cautious opening of the country. It is clear that the majority of the Cubans do not seek to achieve a predatory capitalism but, on the contrary, want to keep the achievements of the revolution, such as education for all and comprehensive medical care. The Cuban people remember all too well that the island was in the stranglehold of the Mafia and large corporations.
The artist Rinaldo Hopf succeeded in capturing all this in his watercolors. Sprawling Caribbean joy, pride and style, coupled with a revolutionary consciousness. It almost seems as if the colors of his pictures themselves begin to dance. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the new works are painted much more freely and spontaneously than before, but perhaps it is also due to the fact that Rinaldo Hopf makes use of the Sumi-e techique which lends itself perfectely for handmade papers from China and India.
