Verbal Communication and Cognition in Galician

Xosé Rosales Sequeiros
Qatar University

This book explores current pragmatic theory applied to Galician, focussing on a number of key aspects within utterance interpretation, communication and cognition. It involves applications of pragmatic theory to various areas of Galician language mentioned below. In doing so, it critically considers earlier approaches to the study of pragmatic interpretation, including, particularly, the Gricean approach to linguistic communication.

The book argues that this earlier approach to pragmatics does not measure up to critical analysis and is thus subject to a number of counterexamples. In particular, the evidence shows that Gricean pragmatics doesn’t provide either a sufficient or necessary basis for a comprehensive and unified account of utterance interpretation.

An alternative approach is then discussed based on the notion of relevance, as developed within Relevance Theory, which integrates the role of context and cognition within linguistic communication. This alternative view shows that it is possible to provide a unified account of pragmatics by taking into account two fundamental aspects about human cognition: processing effort and cognitive effects. The interaction between these aspects and communicative cognition provides the basis for a comprehensive account of utterance interpretation, which resolves many of the problems encountered by earlier approaches.

In applying and developing these pragmatic concepts, a number of areas are covered within Galician. Firstly, the current framework is considered as a general approach to Galician pragmatics. Secondly, the distinction between explicit and implicit meaning is applied to a range of constructions in Galician. Thirdly, there is a discussion on the role of pragmatics in disambiguation processes in Galician. Finally, the new approach is applied to irony and metaphor in Galician, including a discussion on the new research area of lexical pragmatics.

Varieties of Linguistic Meaning in Galician

Xosé Rosales Sequeiros
Qatar University

This book focuses on semantics and in particular non-truth-conditional meaning in Galician. It covers a range of topics in this area and discusses previous approaches to the study of non- truth-conditional meaning in the language, such as Speech Act theory and Gricean conventional implicatures.

The study shows that previous approaches to non-truth-conditional meaning fall short of providing an explanatory account of this type of meaning in Galician, as they fail to offer a comprehensive and unified theory of linguistic semantics. Moreover, they are shown to be insufficient, and often not even necessary, in explaining linguistic semantics in general and non-truth-conditional meaning in particular in the language.

The study explores an alternative approach by integrating new advances in the discipline applied to Galician. It develops a unified and explanatory account of linguistic semantics by considering two key contrasts. One is the contrast between conceptual and procedural meaning, and the other between explicit and implicit communication. These contrasts interact with different levels of representation available in linguistic communication to enable us to account for the heterogeneous nature of linguistic meaning in the language.

The discussion encompasses a range of linguistic categories, including sentence adverbials and parentheticals, discourse and pragmatic connectives, discourse particles and interjections, and mood indicators (imperative and interrogative) in Galician. The study argues that the analysis of these categories provides evidence for the alternative account developed here based on the interaction between different types of meaning and communication, which in this study is applied to different areas of Galician language.

Focus in Italian: an experimental interface approach

Giorgio Carella
University of Roma Tre

This study deals with the use of Focus in Italian, adopting an interface perspective that takes into account the interactions between the different levels of analysis involved. This research concentrates on three types of Focus (i.e., Information Focus, Corrective Focus and Mirative Focus) and is aimed at investigating (i) the syntactic and prosodic properties of the three Foci, and (ii) their behaviour in different embedded contexts.

In order to achieve these goals a written acceptability judgment test has been designed and distributed to 120 native speakers of the Italian variety spoken in Lazio. Since initial test results generated new queries, subsequent tests on production and prosodic aspects have been designed and run.

The analysis of experimental data suggests that in-situ positioning is preferred for all Focus types syntactically, with fronting being less acceptable. Prosodically, the canonical intonation linked with Focus is identified as H*+L contour, while a rising L+H* tone validates the 'discourse salience' of the focused element, marking an Intonational Boundary. These findings suggest independent Intonational Phrases for Focus constituents, aligning with previous proposals.

The study, organized across four Chapters, concludes by consolidating the diverse test outcomes and proposing a comprehensive analysis.

Study of an Abruzzese Language Variety
Uâʃtaréule
Documentation, Analysis and Relationship with Italian

Ray LaVerghetta
Howard Community College

This study presents a thorough grammatical description of one of the less well-known languages spoken on the Italian peninsula – Abruzzese, specifically the variety spoken in Vasto, in the province of Chieti, known as Uâʃtaréule among its native speakers. Included in the study is a detailed analysis of the variety’s syntax, which is the component of grammar that researchers have traditionally studied the least when examining the Latin- derived, non-Italian languages spoken on the peninsula. The study also provides a careful description of the variety’s sound system, its morphology, its extensive linguistic variation along multiple dimensions, and the significant language contact phenomena that have influenced its grammar as well as the grammar of the regional Italian spoken in the area. Finally, it explains in accessible terms for the local language community  the true character and value of its linguistic patrimony and suggests possible options for ensuring the viability of the variety going forward.
