This volume brings together thirteen papers on sound change dealing mostly with Romance in general, several Romance languages in particular (French, Italian, Rhaetoromance, Romanian, Spanish) and a few non-Romance languages as well (Basque, K’ichee’). Most papers are about the articulatory and acoustic causes of sound change and how spatiotemporal variation in production affects the perceptual identification of phonetic segments. Other relevant research topics are the relationship between phonetics and phonology and the influence of the speakers’ age and provenance and of word frequency on the speed at which sound changes take place. The contributions of this volume report acoustic and/or articulatory data in support of particular explanatory interpretations which may inspire future work on diachronic phonology.

In questo volume si affronta il tema delle costruzioni a verbo supporto, di grande rilievo sia a livello teorico sia per i risvolti in linguistica applicata. Con un costante riferimento alla nascita e all’elaborazione del concetto, si accoglie l’invito dei dati a una sua estensione, tenendo conto della nozione di predicato complesso. Si suggerisce così il passaggio da una concezione binaria, che vuole il verbo totalmente desemantizzato e la predicatività tutta a carico del nome, a una idea di predicatività “diffusa” nel predicato analitico e realizzata con diverso contributo del nome e del verbo, a seconda delle diverse costruzioni.
 
Sullo sfondo di questa proposta di allargamento del concetto e considerando dati soprattutto del latino e dell’italiano – ma anche delle altre lingue romanze e dell’inglese – nel volume si discute di che cosa significhino leggerezza del verbo e predicatività, del nome e dell’intera costruzione, ma anche del ruolo della coesione e della possibile reinterpretazione dei test proposti per individuare le costruzioni a verbo supporto. Si allarga, inoltre, la riflessione dal piano sintagmatico a quello, paradigmatico, della sostituibilità dei verbi supporto di base con estensioni che danno luogo a configurazioni con valore aspettuale e diatetico piuttosto regolare, con un ruolo non secondario nell’organizzazione del lessico. Si spazia, infine, dalla dimensione sincronica a quella diacronica, in cui risultano chiare la sostituibilità dei verbi supporto di base nel tempo e le sottili dinamiche di mutamento nei meccanismi che regolano la lessicalizzazione sintetica e analitica.

This book explores the limits and possibilities of morpheme ordering in the noun phrase. Based on a sample of fifty geographically and genetically diverse languages, it presents the attested – and unattested – combinations of case, number, and definiteness morphemes. The account covers not only languages with agglutinative morphology but also languages that fuse more grammatical categories into a single morphological exponent – a portmanteau. The book shows that not all patterns of morpheme ordering that are logically possible are equally represented within the sample and, importantly, certain patterns are not attested at all. The book provides an account for this observation by using the latest theoretical tools from the nanosyntactic framework, namely spellout-driven movement, backtracking, and Spec formation. The results of this study provide evidence for the hypothesis that ordering in morphology is governed by the same principles as in syntax.

Las lenguas y los sentidos es una investigación contrastiva y tipológica sobre el procesamiento lingüístico desigual de cuatro dominios sensoriales  (sound, smell, taste and color) en 4 lenguas, dos europeas (alemán  y castellano) y dos americanas (wixárika y miˀphaa). Cada dominio es investigado en las 4 lenguas y en cada lengua se hace un estudio comparativo de los 4 dominios. Las 4 lenguas comparten una baja densidad de términos básicos en los dominios del color, olor y sabor, pero la comparación no se limita a los términos básicos, sino que se extiende a 13 técnicas que con-stituyen una operación lingüística; la mitad de ellas no forman términos léxicos, pero contribuyen de manera importante a la desigual estructuración de un discurso en los cuatro dominios y en las 4 lenguas.
 
Semántica y pragmática son las dos invariantes funcionales que actúan de manera complementaria en la operación. La actividad lingüística es un sistema dinámico movido tanto por reglas semánticas abstractas como por reglas pragmáticas que coarticulan el significado inherente con el conocimiento práctico y la situación comunicativa. En las técnicas léxicas, sobre todo en el etiquetado específico, prominente en wixárika, alemán y español en diferentes grados, prevalece el componente semántico, mientras que otras técnicas como el etiquetado genérico o la técnica resultativa se basan en procesos inferenciales que completan el significado a partir del contexto.

The goal of the book is to investigate the fine morphological details of nominalizations and participles in Czech, with extensions to Germanic languages such as Norwegian and English. The individual studies contained in the book are grounded within the framework of Nanosyntax. The leading idea of this approach is that the fundamental building blocks of syntactic structures are smaller than morphemes and correspond to individual grammatical features. The features are then mapped onto pronunciation by phrasal spellout.
 
The studies in this book revolve around the question of what the grammatical ingredients of participles and nominalizations are, how they map to surface morphemes, and how this architecture allows us to understand both the overarching generalizations as well as the language-particular details. La operación persona va más allá de los actos de habla singulares y de secuencias de actos de habla. La actividad verbal o logogénesis es interactividad y como tal implica transitar de los aspectos personales a los interpersonales, de un modelo secuencial a un modelo circular de intercambios, de un paradigma de roles discursivos fijos a una operación que es esencialmente co-operación, de una secuencia de notas a los acordes polifónicos. El encabalgamiento de roles discursivos y roles participativos genera una relación circular entre los roles discursivos o enunciativos y los roles participativos, así como una relación dialéctica entre los dos principios fundamentales, constitutivos de todas operación lingüística, el semántico y el pragmático.
 
El concepto de persona es inseparable del concepto de modalidad. Si la investigación de la persona en castelano nos llevó a la modalidad, al revés la investigación de la modalidad en wixárika desembocó en el dominio de la persona. Una visión dinámica de la modalidad es imprescindible para entender la co-construcción de textos o conversaciones. En el caso parrticular de los textos académicos que llamamos tesis, se muestra que la certeza se construye de manera colaborativa, dinámica y gradual.
