Straight Eight grows straight cumbers with eight inch (20cm) fruit: you could say it does what it says on the tin! It is very vigorous variety, fast growing with fruit ready from 8 weeks after transplanting. It is happy grown outdoors, a cucumber superstar, this classic variety has an excellent flavour. SOW: inside in April/early May in individual pots, keep moist & warm (not waterlogged)
GROW: to plant outside, harden off once they have 2/3 leaves; they prefer a sunny and sheltered site and you may need to protect them from wind while they settle in. Straight Eight is very quick; fruit can be ready in just 8 weeks. This variety may need some low canes if the fruits set where they can touch the ground. Mulch if possible, they respond to a mid-season liquid feed too! You can grow this variety in a greenhouse if you prefer; the growth will be a little more vigorous.
EAT: the lovely dark green fruits have little white spines (simply peel) and with a small seed cavity they are super in summer salads.
