DAVE PLOWMAN 'ROYAL AERIAL'. 4 ½''. 1980, unnumbered. One of the earliest Plowman reels.
Wide drum with 6 brass spokes and twelve deep line lays, solid back. Running on Swiss-made highest quality aircraft bearings, back rim with hexagon-screwed chrome foot with central hole, backplate with two brass screws securing check mechanism, large champagne silver knurled on/off check knob, drum front with ten large perforations and twin tapered black handles, back with centre raised boss with drum release screw. Whole reel is black anodised and housed in bespoke made aluminium hinged lid box with black painted finish. In near MINT condition having had only very light use in its 39 year life. A extremely desirable, highly collectable and historically important reel being one of the first unnumbered Plowman reels produced and preserved in lightly used nr. Mint condition.
Dave Plowman is, in our opinion the finest ever maker of bearing centre pin reels featuring the highest quality materials and exceptional engineering skills. This reel was used initially for a short time by maker Dave Plowman on the Dorset Stour before being sold to Mr.Tony Peggs who used it only a couple of times before it passed to Mike Barker who, similarly, hardly used it. It was sold to Stacey Weeks in 2005 and acquired by me in 2009. JH
