What is Pyrography?

Pyrography is simply the art of burning the subject into the media with a hot-tipped stylus. One can use a variety of materials (paper & leather, for example), but I exclusively use wood. To over-simplify the technique, I first pencil-sketch the basic outlines and key features of the subject onto the wood, as mistakes are easy to correct at this stage. Then, using a very fine wire tip in the stylus and by varying the temperature of the tip and time in contact with the wood, I can create different shades and marks to draw the artwork onto the wood. Going back over a previous 'burn' deepens the dark shade and creates shadows or texture (much as one would use regular artists pencils). Use of a fine wire in the stylus is particularly important for fine details such as the lines of an animals fur. The completed artwork is then either sprayed with a clear lacquer and/or given several coats of clear satin varnish.

I occasionally use a touch of colour in my work. Often just to emphasise the gold or brass features on a traction engine, or for a pet that has very white fur. Sometimes the very "Sepia" appearance of pyrography isn't enough to do the subject justice, so I will then employ the subtle use of colour to enhance the artwork. I either use metallic acrylic paints or "water pencils" for more subtle shades.

My FRAMED ART is drawn on beech or pine-faced plywood as the wood can be cut to a suitable shape for framing. I use standard sizes, A4, A3 and A2, but I can cut to any size the customer requests. My LOG SECTION ART  is drawn on a range of wood species, Yew, Acacia, Walnut, Ash, to name but a few. Most wood species are suitable, but fairly obviously, very dark wood such as mahogany won't work.

I never repeat any of my artworks, so you can be sure each one is unique - no-one else in the world will have one like it!

I work from photographs (much less trouble, as the subject doesn't move!), so I can draw any subject you like (but I dont do people).
